Mater Dei Loses Lead, Falls in Final of Girls’ Volleyball Tournament

Mater Dei lost its first match of the season Saturday, falling to Chula Vista Bonita Vista, 6-15, 11-15, 16-14, 15-9, 16-14, in the championship match of the Del Mar Torrey Pines girls’ volleyball tournament.

The Monarchs, ranked sixth in Orange County, won the first two games and held leads of 9-2 and 14-10 in the third, before Bonita Vista rallied behind Jennifer Saleamula’s 38 kills.

Breegan Mulligan, an all-tournament selection, had 28 kills for the Monarchs (12-1) in the championship match and 22 in a 15-11, 5-15, 15-13, 9-15, 15-6 semifinal victory over Torrey Pines. Whitney Pavlik and Kelley Kincheloe each had six blocks against Torrey Pines.

Laguna Beach splits--After losing to Torrance Bishop Montgomery, 16-14, 15-9, 3-15, 15-10, in an earlier consolation match, Laguna Beach (7-5), ranked sixth in Orange County, came back to sweep fifth-ranked Corona del Mar, 15-1, 15-5, 15-9.

Sarah Salem had 18 kills and Brittany Wood had 12 for the Artists, who defeated the Sea Kings for the first time in two years.

Newport Harbor wins consolation final--With her team trailing, 13-5, in the second game, Claire Allen served 10 consecutive points, including four aces, as the seventh-ranked Sailors (8-5) defeated Bishop Montgomery, 15-8, 15-13, 15-6, in the consolation final.

Earlier, Taylor Govaars had 24 digs and 10 kills and Christine Woller had 17 kills to lead Newport Harbor to an 11-15, 15-10, 13-15, 15-9, 15-7 win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. In the Sailors’ first match of the day, Liz Lord had eight kills in a 15-6, 15-5, 15-9 win over Santa Margarita.

In the North Orange County boys’ water polo tournament:

Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 15, Canyon 14 (2 OT)--Canyon’s Jon Pease scored with just under two minutes remaining in the second overtime to tie the consolation game at 14-14, but Mira Costa’s Bill Cassaday scored about a minute later to seal the victory. Pease finished with four goals and Dustin Lazano had three.

Earlier, the Comanches lost to Upland, 9-6, as Chris Meyer scored four goals. Koby Capelouto made 18 saves in the two games for Canyon (10-7).

Troy loses two--Evan Markstrum had three goals and Kevan Koskie two for Troy (13-9) in an 8-7 loss to Huntington Beach in consolation play.

In another consolation game, Troy fell behind, 7-1, at halftime and never got close in a 14-4 loss to Etiwanda.

Koskie had two goals and goalkeepers David Mahakian and Chasen Seymore combined for 11 saves.

In nonleague water polo:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 17, Capistrano Valley 7--Garrett Bowlus scored seven goals and Artie Dorr had five for host Corona del Mar, which outscored Capistrano Valley, 8-2, in the second half.

No. 9 El Toro 10, Santa Margarita 7--Brett McCleave had four goals and Travis Patterson had three to lead the Chargers (11-8). Jeremy Randle had 13 saves for the Chargers, who played without Coach Don Stoll, who was serving a one-game suspension for receiving a red card in the Chargers’ 10-9 victory over San Clemente on Thursday.

University 13, Vista Rancho Buena Vista 10--Peter Fyfe had five goals, Teddy Peck had four and Charlie Nutt and Brian Chen each had two for host University (13-6), which never trailed.
