Coash Applies Brakes to Hart Streak

Hart High’s 18-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday thanks to junior left-hander Jake Coash.

Coash (7-0) struck out eight, walked one and scattered eight hits in Canyon’s 4-2 Foothill League baseball victory at Canyon.

Hart (18-1, 7-1 in league play) had the tying run at the plate twice in the seventh inning, but Coash struck out Andy Sevanian and Chris Giordano to end the game.

Canyon (11-6-1, 5-3) took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on pinch-hitter Eric Ashbrook’s run-scoring single and Ryan Burke doubled home a run in the sixth.

Bill Susdorf of Hart had two doubles, two singles and two stolen bases. But by taking the lead late in the game, Canyon prevented Hart from using Susdorf, who has seven saves, as a closer.

Crescenta Valley 5, Glendale 2--Sophomores Kyle Barratt and Aaron McGuinness hit home runs for the Falcons in a Pacific League victory at Stengel Field in Glendale.

Last month, Glendale defeated Crescenta Valley, 5-1, when the Falcons made eight errors. No sophomoric problems this time.

“Here at this school, the best guys play, no matter your age or what your driver’s license says,” Coach Phil Torres of Crescenta Valley said. “They really do a good job for sophomores. These guys are good.”

Barratt had two singles for the Falcons, who had better timing with runners on base. Glendale (11-7, 5-3) stranded 10 runners, including at least one in every inning but the fifth.

“No timely hits,” Glendale Coach Jay Chadwick said. “I think their pitchers could have worked themselves into a pretty big jam, if we’d have let that happen.”

Colt Forsythe, also a sophomore, hit a run-scoring triple during a two-run second inning for Crescenta Valley (13-4, 6-2), which trails Arcadia by one game. The teams play Tuesday at Stengel Field.
