NASCAR Owner Roush Critical After Plane Crash

Winston Cup team owner Jack Roush was critically injured when the small plane he was piloting crashed Friday, NASCAR Vice President Jim Hunter said.

Roush, whose 60th birthday was Friday, was in critical condition at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., Hunter said.

The plane went down in a residential area about 6 p.m., a dispatcher for the Alabama state troopers said. A newspaper photographer at the scene said the plane crashed into a pond in the gated community.

Drivers for Roush Racing are having an exceptional season . Matt Kenseth is second in the Winston Cup standings, Mark Martin is third, Kurt Busch sixth and Jeff Burton 11th. Kenseth has two Winston Cup victories this year and Busch one.

During his tenure in NASCAR’s top stock car series, Roush’s team has won 53 races.

Rookie Jimmie Johnson won the pole for Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway with a lap of 186.532 mph.

Golf

Phil Mickelson shot a seven-under-par 64 to tie Jack Nicklaus’ 36-hole scoring record in the WorldCom Classic at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Mickelson, who began play five strokes behind early second-round leader Justin Leonard, had a 13-under 129 total to match the mark set by Nicklaus en route to his 1975 victory.

Davis Love III, the first-round leader at 62, closed with birdies on the 17th and 18th holes en route to a 69. He was tied at 11-under 131 with Leonard, who shot a 64.

Cristie Kerr, seeking her first LPGA Tour victory, shot an even-par 72 in windy conditions to take a two-stroke lead in the Longs Drugs Challenge at Lincoln, Calif.

South Korea’s Mi Hyun Kim shot a 69--the only sub-70 round of the day--to join Australia’s Jane Crafter (71) at four-under 140.

Tennis

Third-seeded Serena Williams tumbled out of the Family Circle Cup at Charleston, S.C., falling, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, to Patty Schnyder in a quarterfinal match.

Top-seeded Jennifer Capriati advanced, defeating Anastasia Myskina, 6-0, 7-5, to set up a semifinal match against Schnyder.

In the other quarterfinals, seventh-seeded Sandrine Testud defeated French compatriot Stephanie Foretz, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3, and Iva Majoli defeated 13th-seeded Amanda Coetzer, 6-3, 7-5.

Tim Henman defeated Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4), to reach the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Henman next faces clay-court specialist and former French Open champion Carlos Moya, who edged Marat Safin, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (4).

The No. 2-ranked UCLA men’s team defeated No. 4 Stanford, 4-3, to earn at least a share of the Pacific 10 Conference championship. A victory over California today will give the Bruins the outright title.

College Basketball

Drew Gooden will skip his senior season and make himself available for the NBA draft after leading the Big 12 Conference in scoring (19.8) and rebounding (11.4) and helping Kansas reach the Final Four.

Florida sophomore guard Orien Greene, who averaged 5.2 points, said he will transfer to another school next season.... Memphis sophomore guard Scooter McFadgon has decided to transfer to Tennessee.

Utah Valley State College, which is trying to make the jump from the junior college level to NCAA Division I by 2003-04, has hired University of Utah assistant Dick Hunsaker to lead the men’s basketball program.

Freshman receiver Charles Fredrick has been suspended indefinitely from the University of Washington football team for missing spring practices.

Wahoo McDaniel, a former pro football player who became one of pro wrestling’s most flamboyant figures, died Thursday of complications from renal failure and diabetes. He was 63. See story, B section.
