La Quinta’s Kennedy Is Not Cleared to Play

Westminster La Quinta pitcher Ian Kennedy could sit out the remainder of the baseball season after doctors did not clear him to rejoin the team Monday, Coach Dave Demarest said.
Kennedy, who signed with USC after giving up only five earned runs in 90 1/3 innings last season, fractured his left kneecap in an outfield collision with a teammate in a preseason scrimmage.
Demarest said Kennedy is planning to continue resting the injury and will see a doctor in another two to three weeks.
“We’ve got to go on like he’s not coming back,” Demarest said. “He’s one pretty down kid.”

Otsugi, a 1990 graduate of Trabuco Hills, previously coached the Mustangs’ junior varsity boys’ soccer team for three seasons and spent two seasons as the school’s girls’ varsity soccer coach.
El Toro, which had to forfeit four victories for using an ineligible player, went 9-11-3 overall and 4-3-3 in the South Coast League. The Chargers advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section Division I playoffs.
