Cerritos, Mira Costa Tee It Up
The Cerritos boys’ golf team, ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times, tees off against seventh-ranked Manhattan Beach Mira Costa today at Brookside Golf Club.
The Dons (13-0, 5-0 in league) defeated fourth-ranked La Mirada, 177-199, in a Suburban League match Wednesday at Lakewood Golf Course. Sophomore Rory Hie shot a three-under-par 33 for medalist honors, and Daniel Kim shot 34.
La Mirada (9-2, 4-1) was led by Daniel Im’s 34 and Ricky Costello’s 38. It marked the first time the seniors, in their four years of playing together, have lost in the same match.
On Tuesday, Hie shot a personal-best, five-under 31 in a 173-212 nonleague victory over Brea Olinda at El Prado Golf Course in Chino.
Cerritos, which began the week ranked No. 3, scored a 188-193 nonleague victory over then-top-ranked Cerritos Gahr on Monday at Lakewood.

Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills, with perhaps its best chance to beat San Clemente in Coach Andy Garcia’s six-year tenure, will have to try again next season after the Mustangs were out-touched in an 86-84 victory by the third-ranked Tritons in a South Coast League opener Tuesday at Trabuco Hills.
Trabuco Hills needed its teams to finish first and at least third in the last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to win. Seniors Michael Kirkpatrick, Doug Smith, Eduardo Ciuffo and Richard Hunter won, but the Mustangs’ other team was fourth.
“Just to get that close and not be able to beat them, that hurt,” said Hunter, who won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles for the Mustangs (2-2, 0-1).
“I would call it a good moral victory,” Garcia said. “We showed that we could hang with them.”
Whether the Mustangs can hang with Mission Viejo, the defending Southern Section Division I champion, will be seen when the teams meet April 6 at Mission Viejo.

Marc Behrman resigned Monday after 1 1/2seasons as Calabasas’ coach.
Behrman, who compiled a 27-7 overall record and a 19-1 Marmonte League mark, wouldn’t comment or give a reason for his departure, but senior captain Andy Rebhun said Behrman had “a few disagreements with players” regarding his coaching style.
Rebhun said Behrman’s focus on conditioning alienated some players, but instead of removing them from the team, Behrman left.
“This is extremely devastating to me,” Rebhun said. “I feel like Marc should be here right now.”
Calabasas (8-1, 7-0) has won its two matches since Behrman’s departure, including a 13-5 victory over Newbury Park on Wednesday.
