Dorsey puts away San Pedro

Los Angeles Dorsey High forced four turnovers to bounce back from a pair of late-season defeats with a 33-17 victory over host San Pedro on Thursday night in a City Section Division I first-round playoff game.

Dons senior defensive back Jabri Proby made two interceptions in the last two minutes, including one he returned 85 yards for a touchdown on the game’s final play.

No. 12-seeded Dorsey (8-3) will play fourth-seeded Woodland Hills Taft (7-4), which defeated L.A. Garfield, 44-14, in a quarterfinal Thursday at Taft.

“The first one I got, I didn’t get a chance to run,” said Proby, whose initial interception came in the end zone. “I said if I got another one and I got a chance to run, I’m going to score.”

Proby’s teammates piled on him to celebrate a victory that erased the sting of losses to L.A. Crenshaw and L.A. Locke the last two weeks.

Fifth-seeded San Pedro (7-4), the defending City co-champion, appeared on the brink of cutting into Dorsey’s 27-17 lead midway through the fourth quarter when the Pirates drove inside the Dons’ five-yard line.

But running back Cristian Farrow fumbled and linebacker Matthew Lyons recovered for Dorsey.

Dons quarterback Joseph Gray completed 12 of 24 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown with one interception. He also ran for 77 yards and a touchdown in 10 carries.

“We knew we had to match their intensity,” Gray said of the Pirates, who were led by Farrow’s 171 yards rushing in 31 carries. “They’re a good team.”

L.A. Jordan had the higher seeding and the home-field advantage.

But Harbor City Narbonne had Melvin Davis, and that was more than enough in a 33-0 victory.

The running back-linebacker rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns and made a key first-half interception for the 11th-seeded Gauchos (6-5), who advanced to play at third-seeded Venice (10-1), which defeated Sylmar, 24-7.

With sixth-seeded Jordan (6-5) driving into Narbonne territory and trailing only 7-0 midway through the second quarter, Davis intercepted a pass at the Gauchos’ 37-yard line and returned it to the Bulldogs’ 12. Narbonne quarterback Chad Dashnaw connected with Sean Parker on a 10-yard touchdown pass two plays later to make it 14-0.

Dashnaw passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. Cornerback Bryan Douglas had two interceptions for the Gauchos.

A knee injury to USC-bound running back D.J. Morgan marred host Taft’s first-round victory over Garfield. Morgan was hurt at the end of a 15-yard run at the outset of the third quarter. He had scored touchdowns on a 37-yard reception and a 15-yard run.

The seriousness of the injury will be determined by an MRI exam expected today. “The kid is an absolute superstar,” Coach Matt Kerstetter said. “It’s rough, but we only can do what we can control.”

Lucky Radley rushed for 162 yards and scored on an 80-yard run. Taft lost quarterback Bam Goodall on the first play of the second quarter when he was shaken up making a tackle. Morgan filled in at quarterback until his injury.
