Unbeaten Corona Centennial romps Corona Roosevelt

Share

Unstoppable. That’s the only word to describe Corona Centennial’s no-huddle, one-back offense Thursday night in its Big VIII League championship game against Corona Roosevelt.

The No. 2-ranked Huskies scored touchdowns on their first nine offensive possessions en route to a 63-21 victory, improving their record to 10-0 and leaving no doubt that they will be an overwhelming favorite when the Inland Division playoffs begin next week.

Over a two-game period, Centennial scored touchdowns on 19 consecutive possessions. The streak ended Thursday when the Huskies took a knee with less than a minute left.

“It’s an amazing streak,” Coach Matt Logan said. “It means the kids are doing a good job executing.”

Roosevelt (8-2) had a brief lead. Elijah Mitchell recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff inside the five-yard line and scored a touchdown. Then the Huskies responded with seven consecutive touchdowns to take a 49-7 halftime lead.

Barrinton Collins rushed for 196 yards and ran for three touchdowns. Quarterback Michael Eubank completed touchdown passes of 25, 16 and 21 yards while also scoring touchdowns on runs of five and 21 yards. Deji Olijade caught two scoring passes.

Roosevelt’s defense had little time to figure out what was happening because the Huskies run their offense with so much speed and precision.

One secret to how Centennial scored 82 points last week and came in averaging 55.6 points a game revolves around its offensive line. It creates holes for Collins and protects Eubank so well that all it takes is execution. Senior center Jacob Olsson leads the line. He was a starter as a sophomore on the Huskies’ state bowl championship team, missed last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and has come back with a vengeance.

Los Alamitos trims Edison

Richard Turner scored on runs of four and 69 yards and caught a 77-yard touchdown pass for host Los Alamitos, which held off Huntington Beach Edison, 26-21, to win the Sunset League title at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

Nicholas Masaniai’s second one-yard touchdown run pulled Edison (7-3, 4-1) within 26-21 with 4:01 remaining, but Los Alamitos (8-2, 5-0) picked up three first downs on its ensuing possession to run out the clock.

Nick Richardson rushed for 163 yards in 17 carries and scored the Griffins’ first touchdown on a 57-yard run with 6:35 left in the first quarter.

Four plays after Masaniai’s one-yard run pulled Edison within six points with 6:07 left in the third quarter, Turner’s 69-yard touchdown gave Los Alamitos a 26-14 lead.

The Chargers drove 73 yards in six plays to take a 7-6 lead on Chase Favreau’s 10-yard quarterback keeper with 4:32 left in the first quarter. Favreau had 217 yards passing and Troy Baljeu had five catches for 81 yards for Edison.
