Baseball: Dorsey wins first City title since 1958

Dons win Division II title with 9-6 win over Van Nuys

It had been 56 years since Dorsey last celebrated a City Section baseball championship, so it was understandable on Saturday afternoon at Dodger Stadium that the players had a hard time figuring out what to do on the final out of a 9-6 victory over Van Nuys in the Division II championship game.

There was no dog pile, but players hugged, celebrated and showed off lots of beaming smiles. An eight-run fifth inning helped wipe out a 4-0 deficit and send the Dons to their first title since 1958.

“They wanted to do it and got it done,” Coach Peter Dobson said.

The Dons took advantage of 11 walks and five wild pitches while getting four hits off four Van Nuys pitchers. Xavier Storey had a two-run single during the eight-run fifth that saw 12 players come to the plate and five reach base on walks. Dorsey made five errors, but pitcher David Lamas was solid after entering the game with one out in the fourth.

“I don’t care how we won as long as we got that W,” pitcher-catcher Noah Whitney said.

Added Dobson: “It was sloppy but they got it done.”

Dorsey, the top seed, finishes 22-4 and offers some hope for other teams in the Coliseum League struggling to regain the luster from an era years ago when one major leaguer after another was being produced in the area.

Gerry Macias finished off a productive post season for Van Nuys with a single and double. Alan Arevalo also had two hits. Cesar Miranda allowed one hit in 3 2/3 innings for Van Nuys.
