Baseball: No seeded teams left in Southern Section Division 2 playoffs

Share

The Southern Section Division 2 baseball playoffs has lost all of its top seeds. The two semifinal games on Tuesday feature La Mirada at Aliso Niguel and Temecula Valley at Placentia Valencia.

Some coaches have been grumbling about the Southern Section rule that only guarantees top teams in the regular season one home game in the playoffs. After that, home-field advantage is based on a coin flip or which team has had fewer home games, no matter their record.

That’s the opposite of the City Section, which allows the higher seed to host each playoff game until the semifinals.

Others want to see a double-elimination tournament, because top teams in the regular season can be eliminated with one bad game.

But the double-elimination tournament idea was voted down in a proposal last year by league representatives, and no one has submitted a proposal to get rid of the way home playoff games are awarded.

It means the margin for error is very small when so many top teams are bunched together, especially in baseball, where one outstanding pitcher can make a huge difference.

So the top seeds are gone, leaving for an unpredictable final two games in Division 2.
