Boys’ basketball: They like Evan Wardlow at Santa Clara

Share

It’s almost the start of the college basketball season, and there should be lots of freshmen contributors from Southern California this season.

Tra Holder from Brentwood is battling for starting point guard position at Arizona State. Isaiah Bailey from Compton is trying to earn playing time at Fresno State. Ditto for former Loyola center Thomas Welsh at UCLA. Stanley Johnson from Mater Dei is expected to be a big-time player for Arizona.

Then there’s Evan Wardlow from City Section Division I champion El Camino Real. He’s a freshman guard at Santa Clara.

“Love him,” Coach Kerry Keating said.

Wardlow has lots of competition trying to break into the starting lineup, but his athleticism and defensive toughness should put him in the mix to be a valuable contributor. He had the fastest 20-yard sprint on the team and highest standing two-foot vertical leap.

Here’s the link to video from a Santa Clara scrimmage and you can see Wardlow making a jump shot.

It should be a great season for first-year players from Southern California in college basketball.
