Boys’ soccer: Cathedral, Loyola settle for 1-1 tie

A year ago, Cathedral and Loyola each won Southern Section championships in soccer and their fans debated loudly who would have won if the two teams had played.

On Saturday, they finally met in a tournament match, but the game ended in a 1-1 tie, so bragging rights could not be earned.

Lucas Doniso had given Loyola a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Cathedral’s Elmer Guerra scored in the 70th minute to make it a tie. Cathedral had 18 shots and Loyola seven.

“Fun game,” Cathedral Coach Arturo Lopez said.
