Football: Corona Centennial comes close but Bishop Gorman prevails, 43-42
Holding a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter over Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, ranked No. 3 by USA Today, Corona Centennial was looking pretty good on Friday night.
But the Gaels rallied behind quarterback Tate Martell and tight end Alize Jones to pull out a 43-42 victory after converting a two-point conversion with under three minutes left, then recovering a fumble to halt a final Centennial drive.
Martell passed for three touchdowns and Jones, committed to UCLA, scored two touchdowns.
The game showed again how dangerous Centennial could become by the time the Pac-5 Division playoffs begin. Since an opening loss to Santa Ana Mater Dei, the Huskies have gotten a lot better. They defeated Orange Lutheran last week, then provided a huge scare to Bishop Gorman. The schedule doesn’t get any easier with a game against Long Beach Poly (3-0) next week.
Bishop Gorman (4-0) now owns wins over Servite and Centennial and plays Santa Margarita at home next week before a showdown game against St. John Bosco (3-0) on Sept. 26 at home.
