Football: Newbury Park is making noise this summer

Share

The timing couldn’t be more perfect for Newbury Park’s football program. Gone from having to face St. Bonaventure, Oaks Christian and Westlake in the Marmonte League, the Panthers are joining the new Camino League made up of Thousand Oaks, Camarillo and Royal this fall. The league will compete in the Northern Division for the playoffs with the Golden, Los Padres, PAC 5 and Tri-Valley leagues.

And now the Panthers are flexing their muscles this summer. On Saturday, Newbury Park’s linemen, led by Oregon-bound 327-pound Zach Okun, won the lineman competition at the Ventura County Coaches’ Assn. passing tournament. The Panthers also went 5-0 in the seven on seven competition.

With the Holmes brothers, Darick and Darnay, transfers from Oaks Christian, adding speed and athleticism to the lineup, Newbury Park could win the league and challenge for a section title in the fall.
