Rick Curtis is out as football coach at Santa Margarita High.

Santa Margarita confirmed the news Thursday afternoon in a news release, saying that the school “will be better served under new leadership.”

Curtis had told OCVarsity.com earlier in the day that a new school president wants to move in a different direction.

Curtis spent two years as head coach, taking over for Harry Welch. He previously was at Irvine Northwood.

Santa Margarita finished 5-5 this season. In the competitive Trinity League, where coaches earning more than $100,000 is routine, winning is expected.

“I am personally thankful for the dedication of Mr. Curtis, but after much discussion and consideration we feel that for the success of our highly competitive football program we must seek new leadership and energy,” President Andy Sulick said in a statement.

JSerra Coach Jim Hartigan, a former Santa Margarita coach, is expected to be targeted as a possible replacement.
