Football: Servite gets another shot at De La Salle

Anaheim Servite gets the tough assigment of traveling to Northern California on Saturday to face Concord De La Salle (4-0), which has beaten teams by scores of 63-0, 41-13, 56-28 and 52-0.

In other words, De La Salle is De La Salle.

“They look extremely strong up front,” Coach A.J. Gass said. “It’s standard De La Salle.”

Last season, Servite lost to De La Salle, 35-10.

Servite is 3-1 and trying to make improvement in time for the Trinity League that begins on Oct. 10. The Friars’ only loss was to unbeaten Bishop Gorman to open the season.

“This will be a big test for us,” Gass said. “We’ve grown since week one, but we’re not where we want to be as a team. Each phase has gotten a little better. We want to see what we can do.”

Oregon-bound quarterback Travis Waller will try to use his arm and legs to get the Friars’ offense to score the needed points to compete with the Spartans.

De La Salle will enjoy playing Servite, because it will be a tune up for its likely annual trip to Carson come December to play in the CIF state championship Open Division bowl game.
