Katie Lou Samuelson of Santa Ana Mater Dei has been selected the Gatorade national player of the year in girls’ basketball.
The Connecticut-bound senior has averaged 30.0 points and 8.7 rebounds in leading the Monarchs to the Open Division Southern California Regional championship game on Saturday against Chaminade at 6 p.m. at The Pyramid in Long Beach.
She was scheduled to be presented her award on Thursday morning at Mater Dei by WNBA All-Star Elena Delle Donne.
Samuelson scored a school-record 42 points for the Monarchs earlier this season. She’s considered the best scorer in girls’ basketball in California, if not the nation.
