Football standout Marquis Williams of Garfield was blunt about how much time he devoted to long jump practice _ not much.

He simply showed up and jumped for the Eastern League finals and City Section prelims. But this week, he decided in preparation for the City finals, “I came out to practice.”

He set a school record on Thursday, leaping 23 feet, 1/2 inch to win the City Section long jump title.

During football season, Williams was the top player in the Eastern League, a defensive back-receiver with terrific speed. He plans to attend Pasadena City College in the fall.

And he’s planning to practice next week after qualifying for next week’s state championships in Clovis.
