College Roundup : Chapman Rally Falls Short, 15-14

Cal State Northridge rallied for six runs in the eighth inning and two in the ninth to defeat Chapman, 15-14, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball game Tuesday at Northridge.

After Northridge (4-2, 17-8) took a 13-8 lead in the eighth, Chapman scored six runs in the ninth to regain the lead. But Lenn Gilmore singled in two runs in the bottom of the inning for the victory. Mike Cruz and Darren Nelson each hit a home run in the ninth for Chapman (0-1, 11-13).

In nonconference baseball:

Christ College Irvine 23, Pacific Coast Baptist 2--Jan Novak was 4 for 5 with four RBIs and Perry Miller was 3 for 5 with three RBIs to lead Christ College (6-14) at Pacific Coast Baptist in San Dimas. Pacific Coast Baptist is 6-10.

USIU 19, Southern California College 7--United States International University used 19 hits, 10 walks and 2 home runs to pound the Vanguards at USIU. Kevin Kasper was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for SCC (7-19).

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:

Cal State Northridge 6-2, Chapman 2-0--Northridge scored five runs in the second inning on three hits and three errors to blow the first game open. Delanie Anderson threw a shutout in the second game to lead the sweep for Northridge at Chapman (2-7, 6-16). Northridge is 9-1 in conference, tied for first with Cal State Bakersfield.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. softball:

Cal State Fullerton 3-5, Hawaii 0-3--Connie Clark scattered three hits and struck out 12, leading Cal State Fullerton to the victory in the first game of a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. doubleheader at the Titan Softball Complex.

In the second game, the top-ranked Titans (4-0, 21-2) committed three errors in the first inning, allowing Hawaii to take a 1-0 lead. Fullerton tied it, 1-1, in the second when Michelle Gromacki singled, scoring Cathi Hall, and scored two runs in the third to go ahead for good. Hawaii fell to 6-6, 8-8.
