FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK : Deuce Is the Trump Card for Dos Pueblos

Dos Pueblos scored only dos puntas last week, but they were enough to beat Santa Barbara, 2-0, in a Channel League game. Gil Gerardo was tackled in the end zone by Dos Pueblos defensive end Brad Hunt in the second quarter for the score.

Judging from the lack of offense, one might think neither team blocked well, but Dos Pueblos Coach Scott O’Leary won’t agree: His team blocked three Santa Barbara field goal attempts.

“They had a shot at an easy kick late in the game,” O’Leary said. “Maybe the earlier blocks made them not want to try another one.”

Santa Barbara had the ball on the Dos Pueblos five-yard line with two minutes to go but could not score in four plays.

“Highly unusual game,” O’Leary said. “I’ve never seen one like it.”

The beat goes on: Carpinteria’s 42-0 win over Moorpark marked the 47th consecutive game in which the Warriors have defeated the Musketeers. The streak dates to 1935.

Although he’s only in his fourth year, Moorpark Coach Bob Noel is weary of losing and has complained to Principal Cary Dritz about lack of practice and training time. Not all Moorpark athletes have physical education class scheduled as their last class of the day.

If changes are not made, Noel said he plans to inquire about coaching and teaching jobs elsewhere.

“We have perfectly good weight machines but our kids don’t get a chance to use them,” Noel said. “Our school is making strides to improve but the kids deserve a better shake.”

Noel guided the Musketeers to the Southern Section playoffs his first year at the helm but has an overall record of 11-24-2, including a 1-4 start this season.

Tri, try again: The bottom three Tri-Valley League teams have been outscored, 480-60. Bishop Diego has been outscored, 173-12, Fillmore has been outscored, 178-14, and Moorpark has been outscored, 129-34.

The worst may be yet to come, however. Bishop Diego and Fillmore have yet to play Carpinteria, the No. 1-ranked team in the Inland Conference.

The 3,000 club: With 140 yards against Royal last week, Marc Monestime of Thousand Oaks became the second Ventura County player ever to rush for more than 3,000 career yards.

Monestime, a senior tailback, has 3,087, second only to Hilria Johnson, who gained 3,709 from 1977-79.

Johnson, who lives in Oxnard, said he will watch Monestime when Thousand Oaks visits Channel Islands on Nov. 6. Hilria’s brother, John, is a junior at Channel Islands.

“I want to watch Monestime play,” said Hilria, who played quarterback at Channel Islands. “I hear he’s pretty good.”

JC watch: Winning is less than a snap for Ventura College, which botched three snaps on field-goal attempts in a 16-13 loss to Santa Barbara City College last week. Ventura is 0-5, including two Western State Conference losses.

After four consecutive victories, including a streak of 11 shutout quarters in a row, Moorpark College dropped its first game, 26-23, to Bakersfield last week. The Raiders had outscored opponents, 54-0, in first quarters before Reggie Yarbourgh went 93 yards for a touchdown on Bakersfield’s first play from scrimmage.

Saturday at 1:30 p.m., Ventura meets Glendale at Glendale High and Santa Barbara visits Moorpark.

High school schedule: Ventura visits San Marcos tonight at 7:30 in a Channel League game. In Channel League games Friday at 7:30 p.m., Buena plays Dos Pueblos at San Marcos High, Oxnard visits Rio Mesa and Hueneme visits Santa Barbara.

Newbury Park visits Channel Islands in a Marmonte League game Friday at 7:30.

Frontier League openers Friday at 7:30 p.m. include Agoura at Nordhoff, Calabasas at Santa Clara and Bishop Diego at Santa Paula.

In Tri-Valley League games Friday at 7:30 p.m., Fillmore plays St. Bonaventure (1-4, 1-1) at Larrabee Stadium, Oak Park visits Moorpark and Santa Ynez visits Carpinteria. Simi Lutheran visits California Christian in a Heritage League game Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
