SAN DIEGO ALL-COUNTY BASKETBALL TEAMS : Repeat Picks, Balance Story of Girls’ Team

Share

In the past few seasons, Point Loma High School and Terri Mann dominated girls’ basketball in the San Diego Section.

But in 1987-88, Mann was playing for Western Kentucky, and the county became more balanced. Point Loma’s string of four state championships was ended by Mt. Carmel, which won the Division I section title. San Pasqual was the best in Division II and went all the way to the Southern California Regional championship game.

The balance is reflected in The Times’ All-County team; the 10 players selected are from 10 schools.

There are six repeat selections on the team. Chris Enger of Vista, the San Diego Section’s scoring leader; Julie Doria of San Pasqual; Leslie Ellis of Santana; Lynda Jones of Mt. Carmel; Nicole Anderson of La Jolla, and Kathy Weathers of Madison return. Enger and Anderson are juniors; the other repeaters are seniors.

The players:

Chris Enger, 6-4 junior center, Vista

Enger led the county with a 27.9-point average, and her 810 points were the fourth-highest single-season total in section history. She averaged 16 rebounds and just under 10 blocked shots; she had 17 blocks in one game.

She was the Palomar League’s player of the year for the second time after she led Vista to a 23-6 record, 12-0 in the league.

Her best overall game was against eventual section Division I champion Mt. Carmel, when she had 41 points, 22 rebounds and 10 blocks.

Julie Doria, 5-7 senior guard, San Pasqual

Doria, a varsity starter as a freshman, is a two-time Avocado League player of the year. She led San Pasqual (28-3) to the San Diego Section championship and the regional final.

She averaged 16.9 points, 4.2 steals, 6.1 assists and just 2.1 turnovers.

Doria will play at the University of San Diego next season.

Monica Filer, 5-8 junior guard, Point Loma

Filer was the county’s fifth-leading scorer with a 22.1 average. She was named the City Eastern League’s co-player of the year as the Pointers went 27-3.

Filer averaged 4.9 assists, 6.3 rebounds and 5.1 steals, and her 661 points moved her into second place on the school’s all-time scoring list behind Mann. She’s on pace to become one of the county’s top four all-time scorers.

“She’s a great passer and an excellent defensive player,” Coach Lee Trepanier said. “She’s going to be the best guard in San Diego, bar none. She can post up, shoot the long shot and drive to the basket.”

Leslie Ellis, 6-0 senior forward, Santana

Ellis, a four-year starter, was a two-time Grossmont League player of the year. She led Santana to three league titles and an 83-17 overall record.

Ellis scored 1,579 career points, and her 21.5-point average this season led the league and was ninth in the county. She also averaged 10 rebounds and 6 assists while leading Santana (25-3) to the section Division I championship game.

Her free-throw percentage of 80.2 set a section record.

“Her all-around overall skills are very, very good,” Santana Coach Wade Vickery said. “She handles the ball very well for a big girl.”

Ellis will play at Eastern Montana, a Division II school, next season.

Sue Hawke, 5-10 senior forward, Patrick Henry

Hawke, a three-year starter, helped Patrick Henry to a share of the City Eastern title and was named the league’s co-player of the year. She averaged 20.8 points and 11.7 rebounds during the Patriots’ 16-6 season.

“When we needed points, we went to her,” Patrick Henry Coach John Ferguson said. “People would double- and triple-team her, and that opened it up for our other players.”

Hawke was also the City Eastern tennis player of the year and is one of the leading hitters for the softball team as a first baseman.

Lynda Jones, 6-2 senior center, Mt. Carmel

Jones led Mt. Carmel to the section’s Division I championship and a spot in the Southern California Regionals. She averaged 16.9 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks during the Sundevils’ 24-5 season.

She averaged more than 20 points and 14 rebounds during the playoffs and had 21 points and 12 rebounds in the section championship victory over Santana.

“She could score more if we needed her to score more,” Coach Peggy Brose said. “We had three players who averaged in double figures.”

Jones will play at the University of San Diego.

Nicole Anderson, 5-3 junior guard, La Jolla

Anderson, the county’s leading scorer as a sophomore, was second-best this year with a 25.1 average. She helped La Jolla to a 19-5 record and a share of the City Western League title.

She is a three-year varsity starter and three-year all-league selection and twice was named player or co-player of the year. She also averaged 6 assists, 7 rebounds and 5 steals.

“She’s been an integral part of our team as far as she brings up the level of play,” La Jolla Coach Lori Schwalbach said. “The other girls see what she does, and they work harder.”

She had season highs of 35 points against league rival Mission Bay and 33 points and 10 rebounds against Madison.

Kathy Weathers, 5-9 senior forward, Madison

Weathers, a three-year All-City Eastern League selection, is a slick forward who has the ability to dominate a game. She was the county’s seventh-leading scorer with a 22.0 average and led the Warhawks to the section Division II semifinals, in which they lost to San Pasqual.

Weathers also averaged 11.2 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 2.0 assists.

Terri Butler, 5-4 senior guard, Crawford

A three-year starter, Butler went from All-City Central League honorable mention as a junior to the league’s player of the year. She was the county’s No. 3 scorer with a 23.5-point average and led the Colts to the league championship and a 15-8 record.

“She’s always been a great passer and dribbler,” Crawford Coach Jeff Olivero said. “This year she really came into her own with her shooting.”

Cristina Willis, 6-1 junior forward, Mission Bay

Willis is a two-year starter for her father, Larry. She was the county’s fourth-highest scorer with a 22.7-point average and also averaged 10 rebounds as the Buccaneers won a share of the City Western League title. She was the league’s co-player of the year.

Willis scored double figures in all 26 games, with highs of 42 points against Rancho Buena Vista, 36 against Crawford and 32 against Mar Vista.

“I get the best of both worlds,” Larry Willis said about coaching his daughter. “I knew she could shoot the ball. I didn’t know how she’d react under the competitive aspects of the game. It turns out that’s her favorite part of it.”
