Forward Brent Woods sank 2 free throws with 48 seconds remaining to lead Long Beach Jordan to a 84-77 victory over El Dorado in the championship game of the El Dorado tournament Saturday night.

The Panthers (5-2) were given a tough test by a scrappy El Dorado team. The Golden Hawks fought back in the final quarter of play, but could not pull out the victory.

Long Beach Jordan senior forward David Mitchell was the game’s leading scorer with 21 points and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Mitchell scored 38 points in a Friday semifinal victory over Sunny Hills.

Jordan opened a 52-38 halftime lead, only to see El Dorado rally. El Dorado (6-2) was led by senior guard Mike Renaud (20 points, 4 assists) and Travis Dowdell (17 points).

Matt Luke’s lay-in with 1:34 left in the game pulled El Dorado to within 1 point (76-75), but that was as close as the Golden Hawks would get.

“The whole tournament was tough,” Long Beach Jordan Coach Ron Massey said. “The kids worked hard and Woods’ free throws were crucial in helping us gain the championship trophy.”
