University City’s Leading Scorer Is Ineligible

Jerome Price, University City’s leading scorer, has been ruled ineligible for the remainder of the high school basketball season for participating in the Gus Macker 3-on-3 tournament last weekend at Jack Murphy Stadium.

CIF rules state that a player cannot compete on an outside team during the high school season of his sport.

“I think the rule needs to be re-evaluated,” University City Coach Tom Medigovich said. “The sentence is much too harsh. He did it innocently. He feels like he let the team down.”

Medigovich said he had no knowledge that Price would play in the tournament.

Price, a 6-foot junior, was averaging 15.8 points a game this season. University City (14-7, 4-2) is tied for first place with La Jolla and Mission Bay in the City Western League.

“When you’re fighting for a league championship, losing your best player takes a toll,” Medigovich said.
