San Diego Team Wins National Title in Boys’ Baseball

The San Diego Stars 12-year-old boys’ baseball team defeated Paducah, Ky., 11-7, to win the championship game of the Continental Amateur Baseball Assn. national tournament.

Jason Green of La Jolla, winning pitcher in the championship game, was named the tournament MVP. Jason Karg and Troy Glaus also made the all-national team.

YACHTING

The San Diego Yacht Club had six boats among the top 10 finishers in Saturday’s Pacific Class Nationals regatta.

Sea Chase, skippered by Phil Chase of the California Yacht Club, finished first.

Onion Truck, captained by Morgan Miller and Bud Caldwell, was the first SDYC boat to cross the finish line, in second. A boat out of the South Bay Yacht Club, La Cucaracha, skippered by Alex Van Wetter and Patrick Nagle, was fifth.

TENNIS

Chris Numbers of El Cajon gained the consolation finals of the USTA Boys’ International Grass Court championships in Philadelphia, but the day ended in disappointment when Numbers and his doubles partner lost in the semifinals of the main draw.

Numbers opened the day with a 6-4, 6-3 consolation victory over Carlos Bustos of Coto de Caza. He then joined Randy Ivey of Irvine and fought to a 4-4 tie in the first set against the No. 2 team of Jonathan Leach (Laguna Beach) and Jimmy Panagopoulis (Aurora, Ill.) before the match was halted by rain.

After they moved indoors, Numbers and Ivey lost, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Numbers will meet Leach in today’s consolation singles final.

SURFING

Two San Diego County surfers advanced to today’s quarterfinals in the seventh stop of the Bud Pro Surfing tour at Oceanside Pier.

Rick Lasch of Del Mar will surf in the first heat today (approximately 6:30 a.m.), and Colin Smith of Cardiff will go in the third heat.

One Oceanside bodyboarder, David Cunniff, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Easy Rider Bodyboard competition, also at Oceanside Pier.
