John Wordin of West Hills, who one year ago this week quit a full-time job to devote more time to his goal of becoming a national-class cyclist, has been selected to the U. S. National Cycling Team.

Wordin, 25, who specializes in road-race and team-time trial events and recently attended the national team camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Dec. 10-23, will join the team for the Tour of Texas, which begins March 28.

The 15-member distance team is selected by a panel of coaches, most of whom attended the national camp last month, Wordin said.

Wordin also is expected to accompany the team on a tour of Argentina and for the Tour de Trump road race later this year.

Glendale College kicker David Bowen and punter Eric Negrey will transfer to San Jose State when the semester ends Jan. 31, Vaquero Coach John Cicuto said.

Bowen made seven of 10 field-goal attempts this season, including two from 46 yards, and was 27 of 34 on extra-point kicks.

Negrey averaged 37.2 yards a punt.

Cicuto also said that running back Doug Dragomer and outside linebacker Mark Reeve will attend Northern Arizona.

Offensive lineman Anthony Navarro is considering an offer from Utah and quarterback Darren Fitzgerald will choose between Humboldt State and Sonoma State, Cicuto said.

Camp Kilpatrick and Faith Baptist each placed three players on the All-Southern Section 8-man football team for Large Division schools.

Representing Camp Kilpatrick are running back Tayon Blockmon, linebacker Tarhonne Boyd and defensive lineman Wayne Edwards.

All players are seniors except for Blockmon (a junior) and Estrada (a sophomore).
