PREP ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Girls Rally in Volleyball

Outside hitter Amy Moeller had 17 kills and Becki Gehlki added 15 to lead visiting Mater Dei to a 6-15, 18-16, 15-4, 15-9 victory over Corona del Mar in a nonleague girls’ volleyball match Tuesday.

The Monarchs (7-1), ranked No. 2 in Orange County, took advantage of 16 unforced errors by the fifth-ranked Sea Kings to score in crucial situations.

Corona del Mar (4-6) also made nine service errors, including two late in the second game after the Sea Kings rallied to tie it, 14-14. Mater Dei held on to win the game, 18-16, and took the next two games for the victory.

Charmayne Conley had 14 kills and Kim Coleman had 21 assists for Corona del Mar.

In other nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Valencia 3, Sunny Hills 2--Brandy Smerko set a single-match school record with 28 kills for host Valencia, which upset eighth-ranked Sunny Hills, 15-12, 9-15, 15-6, 8-15, 15-11.

Amy Tamblyn had 27 kills for Valencia (4-0) and setter Kristen Walker had 60 assists to set another Valencia single-match record. Rachel Hochasang had 22 kills for Sunny Hills.

El Modena 3, University 0--Marni Hichborn had 12 kills for El Modena (6-1), which won, 15-10, 15-12, 15-7.

Irvine 3, Laguna Hills 0--Karissa Meith had 17 kills for Irvine (3-2), which won, 15-3, 15-1, 15-13. Laguna Hills is 1-5.

In Garden Grove League volleyball:

Garden Grove 3, Santiago 2--Kelly White had 22 kills and Kelly Kanawah added 21 as Garden Grove rallied at home for a 12-15, 15-3, 14-16, 15-7, 15-12 victory. Garden Grove is 4-1, 2-1 in league. Jennifer Morris had 13 kills for Santiago (1-2 in league).

In Sunset League volleyball:

Huntington Beach 3, Westminster 0--Outside hitter Tera Walker had 14 kills for the Oilers (3-3, 2-1). Katie Wood added 11 kills and Vanessa Dahl had 10.

In Empire League tennis:

El Dorado 15, Esperanza 3--Sisters Ann and Linda Surapruik swept at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, for visiting El Dorado in the league opener for both teams. Esperanza is 4-3.

In Orange League tennis:

Valencia 12, Brea-Olinda 6--The Tigers (3-3, 1-0) got sweeps from No. 1 doubles team Cyndi Nguyen and Bernadette Cuyugan, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, and the No. 2 duo of Judy Hlavac and Jessica Wilson, 6-0, 6-2, 6-3. Rachel Buenviaje swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, in a league opener at Brea-Olinda.

Western 17, Magnolia 1--Rhonda Lee, Cindy Sengthong and Tien Tien swept in singles for Western (3-4, 1-0). Erin Maroney and Lori Dang teamed to sweep in No. 1 doubles for Western, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0.

In Sunset League girls’ tennis:

Marina 11, Edison 7--Marina got sweeps at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and at No. 3 doubles as the Vikings defeated host Edison for the first time in six years.

Maria Chaves won, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles and Holly Meyers won, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3, at No 2 for Marina. The doubles team of Toowee Cao and Gwendolyn Gratteau won, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch the match.

Huntington Beach 11, Westminster 7--Tasha Monroe swept in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, and Madhu Subherwal swept at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for the Oilers (2-2 in league) at Westminster.

In Garden Grove League water polo:

La Quinta 23, Rancho Alamitos 9--Eric Mammen had eight goals and Mike Tavis seven for La Quinta (8-5, 2-0) at Golden West College. Craig Lee added six goals and goalie Chris Kaps had 16 saves for La Quinta.

In nonleague water polo:

Capistrano Valley 16, Millikan 5--Jeremy Braxton Brown and Alex Lesser each scored four goals for Capistrano Valley (6-1) at Saddleback College.

Esperanza 16, Servite 3--Dru Wasson scored four goals and Brandon Martinez and Eric Poole each added three for Esperanza (3-1). Craig Thomas had 12 saves for the Aztecs.

Fullerton 14, Orange 6--Mike Emery scored five goals and Jeff Rohm and Greg Lewis each scored three for visiting Fullerton (7-6).

Los Alamitos 16, Sonora 10--Randy Wright scored five goals and Kelly Flynn added four for the Griffins (8-4) at Sonora.

Woodbridge 10, Valencia 8--Scott Jackson had four goals and his twin brother, Paul, added two for visiting Woodbridge. Ken Taketani had seven saves for Woodbridge.
