Antelope Valley’s Washington Returns From Injury to Set Passing-Yardage Record

If there were such an award as comeback player of the week in the Foothill Conference, Antelope Valley College quarterback Marty Washington undoubtedly would have been selected.

After missing the previous week’s game because of a bruised right shoulder, Washington celebrated his return to the lineup Saturday by passing for two touchdowns and a school single-game record of 293 yards in a 51-33 victory over Chaffey.

The 293 yards increased his career total to a school-record 1,922 yards. Larry Satterfield held the previous mark with 1,789 yards, set in the 1972-73 seasons.

“I didn’t come up with any elaborate pass plays for Marty,” Coach Brent Carder said. “Our pass plays are designed to be completed if they’re done right. After that, it’s up to the players.”

Much of Washington’s yardage came on touchdown passes of 77 yards to wide receiver Nate Williams and 42 yards to running back Greg Graham. Williams scored on a fly pattern, but Graham’s touchdown came on a seemingly innocuous screen pass.

Despite Washington’s performance, Carder said that the sophomore from Quartz Hill High is still not completely healthy.

“It’s not the type of injury where he’s going to get hurt by getting hit,” Carder said. “It’s one of those injuries that hurts more when he throws.”
