ROUNDUP : CSUN Falls Twice in Volleyball

The Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team entered the Maryland invitational volleyball tournament with the intention of gaining national recognition.

After two matches in the tournament Friday, Northridge might be willing to settle for a victory.

Southwest Missouri State defeated Northridge, 14-16, 15-13, 15-7, 15-9, and Maryland beat the Matadors, 8-15, 15-10, 15-10, 15-13, at Maryland’s Cole Field House.

Against Southwest Missouri State (7-9), the Matadors (8-7) could not mount a consistent attack and finished with an .089 hitting percentage.

Freshman outside hitter Missy Clements led CSUN with 13 kills and teammates Nancy Nicholls and Ana Kristich each added nine. Janene McDaniel had a match-high 17 kills for Southwest Missouri State.

In the evening match against host Maryland (9-6), the Matadors finished with 53 kills compared to Maryland’s 60. But Maryland hit .238 as a team to roll up its score in the final three games.

Maryland also recorded 78 digs compared to 57 for the Matadors. Maryland’s Collen Hurley led all players with 20 kills.

Clements again led CSUN with 17 kills, and Patty Fitzsimmons added 12 and Nicholls 11. Karen Scholl paced the CSUN defense with 21 digs in the two matches.

Northridge will conclude tournament play today in a noon match against Hofsra. The Matadors, in their second season of NCAA Division I competition, will then drive to Georgetown for a nonconference match at 8 tonight against the Hoyas.

In other women’s volleyball matches:

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps d. Cal Lutheran, 15-1, 15-5, 15-6--Lisa Whitaker and Ann Mumma had six and three kills, respectively, to lead the Regals, but it was not enough to give Cal Lutheran a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win.

Cal Lutheran fell to 5-10, 0-4; Claremont-Mudd-Scripps improved to 11-9, 3-1.

Ventura d. Santa Monica 15-8, 15-2, 15-12--Ashley Armstrong had 12 kills and two stuff blocks to lead Ventura in a Western State Conference match. Erin Donaldson of Ventura had eight kills. Ventura is 8-0, 7-0 in conference play.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Royal 13, Buena 4--Jack Kocur led Royal with five goals and Mike Radka had four to lead Royal (12-3) to a nonleague win.

Crespi 11, St. Francis 5--Crespi’s Kris Behrens and Robby Gram each had three goals and Danny Buchta had two goals.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Burbank 13, San Gabriel 5--Burbank’s No. 1 player, Corie Simmons, defeated San Gabriel’s No. 1 player, Linda Lee, 6-3; No. 2 Anne Kim, 6-1; and No. 3 Jereka Lam, 6-2; in a Foothill League match. Simmons is 20-1, 11-1 in league matches this season.

Danielle Purshink, Burbank’s No. 2 player, also won all three of her matches, defeating Kim, 7-5; Lee, 6-3; and Lam, 6-2.

Burbank’s Carolyn Mathe won two of her three matches, defeating Lam, 6-3, and Kim, 7-6 (7-4), and losing to Lee, 3-6.

Burbank went on to win five and lose four in doubles. Burbank’s No. 1 team of Sun-Yun Lim and Ji Park defeated San Gabriel’s No. 1 team of Beverly Chan and Joni Ngo, 6-4, and the No. 2 team of Holly Tran and Shirley Chan, 6-4, and lost to No. 2 May Hua and Taryn Tran, 4-6.

Burbank’s No. 2 team of Isabel Garcia and Mirei Fujita lost to Chan and Ngo, 5-7, beat Hua and Tran, 6-4, and beat Tran and Chan, 6-1. Burbank’s No. 3 team, Elizabeth Kim and Sarah Goodlaw, lost to Chan and Ngo, 2-6, and to Hua and Tran, 1-6, and beat Tran and Chan, 6-0.

Burbank is 4-3, 3-1.

MEN’S SOCCER

Mission 1, Santa Monica 0--Forward William Chavez scored on a crossing pass from Horace Garcia with 15 minutes left to keep the Free Spirit (4-4, 2-0) undefeated in Western State Conference play.
