ROUNDUP : Northridge Turns Back Westmont in Soccer

Cal State Northridge’s Amad El-Zarou scored on a penalty kick 18 minutes into the second half to lift the Matadors over Westmont, 2-1, in a nonconference soccer match at North Campus Stadium on Saturday night.

In improving its record to 7-4, Northridge snapped Westmont’s 11-match winning streak. The Warriors fell to 12-2.

Danny Daniels, a junior forward, scored Northridge’s first goal less than nine minutes into the match on an assist by Bobby Reyes. The goal was the 17th of Daniels’ career, tying him with Jorge Guttierez (1981-82) for 10th place on the all-time Northridge list.

The Warriors tied the score with 32 seconds left in the first half on Justin Wall’s penalty kick.

In other men’s soccer matches:

Biola 3, The Master’s 1--Biola built a 3-0 lead before Mariano Callebreta scored the Mustangs’ (5-7, 4-3) lone goal in an NAIA District 3 match at Biola.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge--The Matadors lost to Hofstra, 16-14, 10-15, 15-7, 15-4, in a Maryland Invitational match at College Park, Md., before heading to Washington, D.C., where they beat Georgetown, 15-7, 16-14, 8-15, 15-7, in a nonconference outing.

The Matadors’ victory over Georgetown (14-8) followed three consecutive losses in as many tries in the two-day Maryland Invitational.

In the afternoon match, freshman outside hitter Missy Clements led Northridge with 13 kills and Patty Fitzsimmons and Nancy Nicholls each had 10 kills. Northridge, however, was limited to a .121 hitting percentage.

Against Georgetown, Nicholls and Ana Kristich each had 10 kills for the Matadors (9-8), and Alison Wool recorded 45 assists.

COLLEGE CROSS-COUNTRY

Santa Barbara Invitational--Jean Harvey of Antelope Valley won the women’s race in a time of 17 minutes 55 seconds over the three-mile course at Sea Cliff Park.

The win was the third in a row for Harvey.

Moorpark, led by Deana Fuess’ fourth-place effort (19:28), finished second in the women’s team standings with 58 points. Irvine Valley won with 29 points.

In the men’s race, Antelope Valley’s Dave Rhodes finished 12th, timing 22:25 over a four-mile course.

Manuel Lopez finished 18th (22:43) to spark Moorpark to a fourth-place finish in the team standings with 170 points.

Long Beach, the defending state champion, won with 22 points, followed by Rancho Santiago (64) and Fullerton (138).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 6, Whittier 0--Cathy Graham scored three goals and Rachel Wackerman had two for Cal Lutheran in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Cal Lutheran.

Goalkeeper Joanne Vanderwal recorded her sixth shutout for Cal Lutheran (10-2, 7-0).

Occidental 2, La Verne 0--Suzanne Oppenheimer scored the match’s first goal, in the 47th minute, to start Occidental (3-6, 3-4) on its way to an SCIAC win over host La Verne (0-7 in conference play).

Erika Imhof also scored for Occidental.
