HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Washington Gets Past Carson, 30-27

Carson turned the ball over five times and committed 13 penalties in a 30-27 loss to Washington in a City Southern Pacific Conference game Thursday night at Gardena High.

The Colts, ranked No. 6 in the Times’ poll, dropped to 2-1 in conference play, 3-3 overall. Fourth-ranked Washington improved to 2-1 and 5-1.

Washington quarterback Sheldon Anderson ran for three touchdowns, passed for another and completed Washington’s comeback by intercepting Carson’s Jamie Sander on the game’s final play. Anderson completed 17 of 36 for 271 yards.

Covina 14, La Puente 7--Senior defensive back David Salberg intercepted a La Puente pass deep in Covina territory with 30 seconds remaining to preserve a 14-7 victory in a Valle Vista League opener at Covina District Field.

Trailing 14-7, La Puente (0-1 in league play, 0-6 overall) drove to the Covina five-yard line before Salberg stepped made his second interception of the game.

Sophomore running back Tim Parry scored the winning touchdown on a five-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Covina improved to 1-0 and 6-0.

Anaheim Esperanza 26, Anaheim Katella 0--Esperanza increased the Southern Section’s longest winning streak to 20 games with an easy Empire League victory at Valencia High.

The Times’ fourth-ranked team, the Aztecs (1-0, 6-0) scored on four of their first five possessions in the second half. Running back Marcus Tayui gained 105 yards and scored on runs of 25 and 21 yards for Esperanza.

Anaheim Servite 28, Huntington Beach Ocean View 7--Junior Elphamous Malbrue rushed for 135 yards in 22 carries and scored two touchdowns as Servite (5-1) won a nonleague game at Huntington Beach High.
