San Clemente Is No Match for El Toro

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

El Toro did a little bit of everything in its 34-0 rout of San Clemente Friday night at Trabuco Hills High School.

And everything went right.

Quarterback Bill McFadden kicked two field goals and completed 11 of 19 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns.

Receiver Jason Bailey was on the other end of the touchdown passes and finished with seven receptions for 115 yards.

And El Toro’s defense held San Clemente (2-4) to 141 yards total offense for its first shutout of the season. With the victory, El Toro improved to 3-3 and 1-0 in the South Coast League.

The solid defensive performance was highlighted in the third quarter when defensive back Pat McAdam grabbed a deflection for an interception and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown and a 19-0 lead.

As easy as the victory appeared, El Toro Coach Mike Milner wasn’t ready to nominate his team for the hall of fame.

“We gelled to a point, but we continue to be kind of inconsistent in the first quarter and that concerns me,” he said. “I think it’s fairly indicative of a young and inexperienced football team.”

El Toro’s first two scoring drives resulted in field goals after incomplete passes and an illegal procedure penalty helped keep the Chargers out of the end zone.
