L.A. Southwest College continued its rags-to-riches story by defeating Ventura, 34-29, in a Western State Conference game Saturday night at Larrabee Stadium in Ventura.

Freshman quarterback Jesse Wallace rallied Southwest to a 22-point fourth quarter in the come-from-behind victory. Wallace completed 16 of 34 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns.

After Ventura ran three plays and punted, Southwest (4-1 overall, 4-0 in conference play) drove 55 yards in eight plays on its first offensive series of the game with freshman running back Takim Brown scoring on a three-yard run for a 6-0 lead.

Southwest then drove 50 yards in four plays with Wallace throwing to wide receiver Michael Stephens for a touchdown and 12-0 lead.

Ventura (1-4, 1-3), which has had trouble in previous games after falling behind early, appeared to be out of the game.

However, quarterback Matt Brimigion found a wide-open Shawn Young for a 79-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 12-7.

Brimigion got Ventura moving in the third quarter, tossing a seven-yard touchdown to Young for a 13-12 lead.

Brimigion passed to running back Danny Taylor for an 11-yard touchdown and 20-12 lead at the end of the third quarter.

But Wallace threw to touchdown passes of 22 yards to Brown and 37 yards to wide receiver Yki Vallery to rally Southwest to a 26-20 lead.
