With No. 1 singles player Page Bartelt missing all but three of Capistrano Valley’s first 12 matches while recovering from a tonsillectomy, Light has stepped forward and the Cougars haven’t missed a beat. Capistrano Valley (11-1), ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section’s Division 4--A has lost only to No. 1 Palos Verdes Peninsula, which might be the best team in the nation. Light, who in her four years with the Cougars is 188-36 in singles play, is 27-3 this season, losing only to Nicole London and Amanda Augustus of Peninsula and Amanda Parson of Foothill. Last week, Light lost only seven games as she swept nine sets in victories over El Toro, Corona del Mar and Irvine. “She gives us a big games-won advantage when she’s out there,” Cougar Coach Kerry Leander said.

Other top performers:

Michelle Berkowitz, who won all her singles sets in Fountain Valley’s tennis victories over Marina and Ocean View, improving her record this season to 37-2.

Allyson Carpenter, who had 17 kills for Capistrano Valley in a four-game South Coast League volleyball victory over El Toro.
