Northcott is such a strong defender that Marina coaches often tell him to practice at less-than-full speed to give others on the defense a chance to practice making tackles. “He’s really, really aggressive, and he’s very quick,” Marina defensive coordinator Larry Doyle said. “For two years now we’ve had a real tough time blocking him in practice even with our best blockers.” The Edison offense had similar problems Friday, and Northcott was involved in 11 tackles, including two sacks of quarterback John Khamis, in Marina’s 15-12 victory over the then-No. 9 Chargers. Northcott also pressured Khamis into an incomplete pass and forced a fumble that Steve Jackson returned 77 yards for a touchdown. Northcott, a first-team All-Sunset League player last year, has seven sacks this season. He has 17 for his career, breaking the school record of 16 set by Tyrone Youngblood in 1977-78.

Brent O’Brien, who scored five goals in Corona del Mar’s 6-5 Sea View League water polo victory over Newport Harbor and four goals in the Sea Kings’ 14-10 victory over San Clemente in the finals of the North Orange County tournament.

Peter Rodriguez, who intercepted two passes, returning one for a 62-yard touchdown in Sunny Hills’ 21-3 victory over Sonora.
