COMMUNITY COLLEGE WATER POLO : Cypress Gets Off to Fast Starts While Winning Its Tournament

Cypress, the sixth-ranked community college water polo team in the state, won the Cypress Mini-Tournament with three convincing victories Saturday at Cypress College.

Cypress scored 46 goals in its round-robin tournament, defeating L.A. Pierce, Rio Hondo and Pasadena. The Chargers did most of their damage in the first quarter of each game.

In the opener, Cypress (23-7) scored seven goals in the first quarter of a 17-5 victory over L.A. Pierce.

In the second game, the Chargers scored five times in the first quarter of a 12-8 victory over Rio Hondo. Ray Schwengel led Cypress with five goals and scored a team-high 11 in the tournament.

In the third game, Cypress scored seven goals in the opening quarter of a 17-7 victory over Pasadena. Brian Pickler led Cypress with four goals in Game 3.

Cypress goalie Darren Bogdanovich recorded 30 saves during the tournament.

In nonconference water polo:

Golden West 20, Saddleback 4--A day after their first loss of the season, the Rustlers (24-1) took a 14-0 halftime lead as Morgan Courtney and Tony Fekete each scored three goals. Saddleback is 8-20.
