San Clemente Shifts Gears in Second Half

Fans were treated to an air show in San Clemente’s 41-29 victory over Foothill Friday night.

San Clemente (2-2) led 10-6 at halftime, but both offenses came alive in the second half, scoring 36 points in less than seven minutes.

Triton quarterback Jeff Carlin, who completed 19 of 35 for 284 yards, began the second half with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Smith, pushing San Clemente’s lead to 17-6.

Foothill (1-3) cut the deficit to three when as sophomore quarterback Tyler Lang, in his first start, completed a short pass to Tramel Robinson, who outran three defenders for an 87-yard touchdown with 9:44 remaining in the third quarter. Lang completed 11 of 18 for 202 yards in the game.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Tritons’ Trevor Insley fumbled away the return and Foothill recovered. Two plays later, Robinson scored on a four-yard run, giving Foothill a 21-17 lead with 8:49 remaining. Robinson finished with two catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Carlin went to work on the next Triton possession, mixing up the run and pass. After hitting Insley on a 43-yard pass, running back Keith Gros finished it off with a five-yard touchdown run to put the Tritons ahead for good, 24-21. Insley caught 11 passes for 147 yards.

On the ensuing kickoff, Foothill’s Robinson fumbled the ball away and San Clemente recovered. Two plays later, Carlin avoided a sack and hit Insley in the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown to put the Tritons ahead, 31-21.

Senior Ryan Hoffman kicked field goals of 25 and 27 yards for San Clemente.
