Valley Beats Hancock, 36-25, in a Hotly Contested Game : College football: Arellanes passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns as coaches engage in war of words.

Tempers flared, opposing coaches exchanged harsh words and there was no postgame handshake after Valley College’s 36-25 victory over Hancock in a Western State Conference game at Righetti High.

There was more than enough to dampen the spirit of Valley Coach Jim Fenwick, whose Monarchs put the game away with an impressive second half.

Fenwick, the recipient of some unkind words from Hancock Coach Barney Eames, was shocked with the postgame activities.

“In my 20 years of coaching, I have never, ever seen a coach go off like that,” Fenwick said. “I can’t repeat some of the things he said. I’m disappointed for him because I was proud of our guys and the way we played in the second half.”

Quarterback Jim Arellanes completed 21 of 39 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Monarchs.

Valley (4-0, 4-0 in conference play) scored touchdowns on each of its first three possessions and extended a 15-12 halftime lead.

Arellanes, held to one passing yard in the first quarter, threw for 119 in the second quarter. He shredded the Hancock defense in the second half and set up a pair of short touchdown runs by Deriek Charles.

Arellanes connected with wide receiver Ricjard Gill on an eight-yard screen pass to cap Valley’s scoring.
