Barbara Fiege, City Section commissioner, said 5,500 fans were at the Sports Arena to watch the boys’ and girls’ Division 4-A basketball finals March 2. She said crowds for the finals have steadily declined the last four years but that the section still expects to show a profit. . . . Michael Granville of Bell Gardens won his third consecutive 800-meter title in 1:51.26 at the National Scholastic Indoor track and field championships in Boston last weekend. . . . Robert Williams, who won the boys’ City Section individual tennis title two years ago, returns this season as Dorsey’s No. 1 singles player and is the leader on a team that is expected to be one of the strongest in the section. Besides Williams, the Don’s feature LeGeorge Mauldin, a 14-year old freshman ranked 14th in his age group in Southern California. Carlos Sandoval is the team’s No. 3 player. All three players are trained by Robert’s father, Richard Williams, who operates the California Tennis Assn., a nonprofit organization that tries to provide tennis lessons to children from the inner city. . . . The Fremont boys’ basketball team, which lost to Crenshaw in the City Section Division 4-A final, was eliminated in the State Southern Regional tournament last week by Mater Dei, 63-57, in overtime.
