Racquetball Singles Players Team Up for Doubles Event

Four of the world’s best professional racquetball singles players--including four-time world champion Cliff Swain--will compete Thursday in a $1,000 winners-take-all doubles match at Pierpont Racquet Club in Ventura.

Swain, the current world title holder, will team with 10th-ranked Tony Jelso of Ventura against sixth-ranked John Ellis of Seal Beach and 11th-ranked Adam Karp of Santa Ana in the 6:30 p.m. match. Swain and Jelso are planning to compete in April’s World Professional Doubles Championship in Pleasanton, Calif.

Jelso, the club professional at Pierpont, was U.S. Olympic Festival singles champion in 1993 and doubles champion in 1995.

Basketball

Ventura College will honor its men’s and women’s basketball teams that won state titles last week with an awards ceremony Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the school gym.

Ventura became the first California junior college to win men’s and women’s basketball championships in the same season.

Valencia High girls’ coach Dennis Mifflin has resigned his position to devote more time to his family and to the school’s baseball program.

The Vikings compiled a 6-17 record under Mifflin in their first season of varsity play, and were 0-10 in Foothill League competition.

Valencia’s baseball team is currently 0-6, 0-1.

Soccer

Midfielder Heidi Greco of Crescenta Valley High has signed to play at New Mexico.

Greco, who had 10 goals and 16 assists for the Falcons this season, chose the Lobos over Colorado, Montana, Syracuse and Gonzaga.
