Harvard-Westlake Repeats Itself

Jason Collins, the tournament’s most valuable player, collected 25 points and nine rebounds as Harvard-Westlake High won its second consecutive Thousand Oaks tournament by beating Washington, 78-60, in the championship game on Friday night.

Jarron Collins added 12 points and six rebounds. The Collins twins shared the MVP award in last year’s tournament.

The Wolverines (5-0) set the tone early by scoring the first 14 points.

Washington scored its first points four minutes into the game.

Ryan Smiley scored 13 points and added six assists for Harvard-Westlake.

B.J. Laffitte scored 20 points for the Generals (3-2), who also got 15 points from Curtis Slaughter.

Harvard-Westlake led, 21-6, after the first quarter and had a 68-37 margin after three quarters.

The Wolverines pulled their starters in the fourth quarter, allowing the Generals to outscore them, 23-10.

Victor Munoz of Harvard-Westlake also made the all-tournament team along with Randy Gastwirt of Oak Park, Brian Freeth and Joe Riccio of Thousand Oaks, and Curtis Slaughter and D.J. Laffitte of Washington.

Thousand Oaks 66, Newbury Park 44--Riccio scored 22 points and Josh Armour added 13 as the Lancers (3-1) took third place.

Brian Bobil and Daniel Boloik each scored nine points for the Panthers (2-2).

Oak Park 74, Dos Pueblos 63--Gastwirt scored 21 points and John Murphy added 13 as the Eagles (3-3) took fifth place.

Oak Park led, 27-23, at halftime but outscored the Chargers, 47-40, in the second half.

Dylan Mooney scored 17 points for Dos Pueblos.

Santa Barbara 65, Grant 50--Ryan “Ox” Atkinson scored 20 points to help the Dons capture seventh place.

Phil Hernandez added 11 points in Santa Barbara’s only victory in the tournament.

The Dons had a 28-20 lead at halftime and held the Lancers under 10 points in the first and last quarters.
