Foothill Reaches Tourney Semifinals

Playing without key starter Robby Arroyo, Foothill was able to hold off Newport Harbor to win, 5-3, Friday and advance to the semifinal round of the South Coast water polo tournament at Newport Harbor High.

Matt McPherson, who scored two goals Thursday against University, again led the Knights with two goals. Foothill (5-0) plays San Clemente at 11 a.m. at Newport Harbor in a semifinal game. San Clemente defeated Villa Park, 8-3.

In other quarterfinal games:

No. 8 Costa Mesa wins--Costa Mesa upset fifth-ranked Capistrano Valley, 10-9, in sudden death overtime at Heritage Aquatic Complex in Irvine. Todd Hilton scored the game-winning goal. Costa Mesa plays Long Beach Wilson, which overpowered No. 8 Laguna Beach, 14-4, in the other semifinal game today at 9:50 a.m. at Newport Harbor.

In a consolation game:

No. 4 Santa Margarita 12, Servite 11 (2 OT)--Frank Uxa scored the winning goal for Santa Margarita with 2 minutes 5 seconds left in double overtime. Chris Ansevin led the Eagles with five goals.

In the Magnolia water polo tournament:

Cerritos Gahr 8, Western 3--Jace Crispin scored all three goals for Western (4-1).

In an earlier game, Crispin scored nine goals and Ronny Cunningham had 13 saves in a 12-5 victory over Mater Dei.
