Pierce Seeded No. 9 in Baseball Playoffs

Pierce, Oxnard and Glendale colleges are among the teams participating in the first round of the junior college baseball Southern California regional Friday and Saturday. The format features eight best-of-three series with the winners advancing to the second round May 15-17.

Pierce (23-14), the Western State Conference Southern Division champion, is seeded No. 9 and plays at No. 8-seeded Harbor (27-14).

Oxnard (27-11), runner-up in the WSC Northern Division, is seeded No. 11 and travels to No. 6-seeded Cerritos (28-10) and No. 16-seeded Glendale (24-15), runner-up in the WSC Southern Division, plays at top-seeded Saddleback (32-9).

Games on Friday are at 2 p.m. Games on Saturday are at 11 a.m., and a third game, if necessary, follows.

SOFTBALL

Playoff bound: Ventura and Canyons open play Friday in the 16-team junior college softball Southern California regional. Four teams advance to the eight-team state championships.

Ventura (21-20), seeded No. 7, plays against No. 10-seeded Santa Ana (20-17) at 2 p.m. at Long Beach City. Canyons (15-12), seeded No. 16, meets top-seeded Cypress at noon at Cypress.

TRACK AND FIELD

Open the vault: Pole vaulter Allyson Crosby of Bakersfield Stockdale High has signed with Cal State Northridge.

Crosby, who has a personal best of 11 feet 3 inches, last year qualified for the state championships, but failed to advance to the final.
