Tyler Ebell remembers one thing about Ventura High’s first game against Arroyo Grande: Pain.

The senior running back rushed for career highs of 393 yards and 44 carries against the Eagles on Sept. 29.

He also tied his career best with six rushing touchdowns, leading Ventura to a 41-28 nonleague victory.

When the teams meet again Saturday for the Division IV championship at Arroyo Grande, Ebell doesn’t need to be reminded how he felt after the first game.

“I was sore,” he said. “My hamstrings hurt, my back was tight. They were physical. Everybody from the Northern League is physical.”

Ebell has rushed for 4,218 yards and set the national season rushing record last week.

Ventura, which has not appeared in a championship game since 1984, will have rooters’ buses making the 120-mile trek Saturday to Arroyo Grande.

Adults ($25) and students ($10) get a game ticket and a ride. Buses leave the high school at 3 p.m.
