Newport Harbor, in search of its second tournament title this season, will have to make its way through a strong field that includes three defending Southern Section champions at the sixth annual Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions today and Saturday.

Newport Harbor, the defending Division I champion and last year’s Santa Barbara tournament runner-up, is top-seeded after winning the Newport Harbor/Corona del Mar tournament two weeks ago. The Sailors (10-0), featuring seniors Anne Belden (29 goals) and Ashling Taylor (28 goals), open against Irvine at 10 this morning at Santa Barbara High.

The 16-team field includes Newport Harbor/Corona del Mar tournament runner-up Santa Ana Foothill (8-2), last year’s Division I runner-up, as well as three-time defending Division II champion Corona del Mar (5-4) and two-time defending Division IV champion Santa Barbara, which won the event last year by defeating Newport Harbor.

Santa Barbara features the most highly regarded player in the Southland in USC-bound senior Kami Craig, the only high school player on the U.S. junior national team. She leads the third-seeded Dons (9-3) with 36 goals and 33 ejections drawn.

Santa Margarita (9-2), with victories over Foothill, Corona del Mar and Santa Barbara, is ranked No. 3 in Division I and also in the mix.
