Section Selects Top Players

Long Beach Poly receiver DeSean Jackson and Los Alamitos quarterback Jim Barnes have been selected the Southern Section Division I offensive players of the year, and Lakewood linebacker Luthur Brown was chosen the defensive player of the year.

Unbeaten Mission Viejo, The Times’ top-ranked team all season, dominated the Division II awards with quarterback Mark Sanchez and running back Chane Moline sharing offensive player of the year and linemen Chase Moline and Nick Reed sharing defensive player of the year.

All seven players were selected to the All-Southern Section team, which is comprised of players from all 13 divisions. Jackson, Brown, Sanchez, Reed and the Moline brothers were first-team selections and Barnes was on the second team.

Straun Joseph, an assistant coach at Pasadena City College, has been selected coach at Granada Hills, replacing Tom Harp, who resigned in December.

Joseph, who played at Iowa, has 20 years of coaching experience. He previously coached at Inglewood and L.A. University highs and Pierce, Compton and Pasadena colleges.

The Shrine All-Star game, matching players from public schools against those from private schools, will be held June 25 at Mt. San Antonio College. Earlier discussions to have California play Texas in an All-Star game this summer sponsored by the Shriners and Air 7 did not succeed. It could happen next fall.

Basketball

Ed Dickson of Bellflower, who committed Tuesday to play football at Oregon, will be counted on to lead the Buccaneer basketball team Saturday when it plays Anaheim Servite at 7:45 p.m. in the featured game of the Orange County Challenge at Hope International University in Fullerton.

Dickson, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound center who played tight end and defensive end in football, had 37 points and 21 rebounds last week in Bellflower’s 69-66 Suburban League loss to La Mirada. Servite is led by 6-8 junior center Blake Wallace, who is averaging 20 points and nine rebounds.

Other scheduled games at Hope are Chino Hills Ayala vs. Murrieta Valley, 10:30 a.m.; Fullerton Troy vs. Downey, 12:25 p.m.; Anaheim Esperanza vs. El Segundo, 2 p.m.; Garden Grove Pacifica vs. Playa del Rey St. Bernard, 3:55 p.m.; Fullerton vs. Riverside King, 5:50 p.m.

Tickets are $8 for adults; $4 for children 7 and over.

Baseball

Woodland Hills El Camino Real will retire the No. 7 jersey of pitcher Randy Wolf, a two-time City Section player of the year, during a ceremony Saturday before the school’s alumni game, which starts at 10 a.m.

Wolf, a pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies, led El Camino Real to consecutive City championships in 1993 and 1994. He pitched the first perfect game in City playoff history in 1993.
