Baseball: Junior left-hander Rece Goodman gives lift to Mater Dei

Share

Hold off on the demise of Santa Ana Mater Dei. They were in The Times’ top 25 rankings this week despite a 2-3 record, and some people were outraged.

Well, the Monarchs got a great pitching performance from 6-foot-3 junior left-hander Rece Goodman on Monday to open Trinity League play with a 2-1 win over Santa Margarita and Griffin Canning. Ace Charlie Vorsheck is scheduled to face Orange Lutheran on Wednesday, folowed by senior Sean Cox taking on St. John Bosco on Friday.

Yes, the Monarchs lost top players from last season’s team, but they’re going to get better every week.

Nobody knew much about Goodman before the season, but he has thrown two complete games. “He’s had two great outings and kept his pitch count down,” Coach Burt Call said.

Mater Dei still needs to get its hitting attack going, but there’s plenty of time. Last season, the Monarchs were the No. 1 seed for the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs and lost in the opening round. If Goodman and Vorsheck live up to their early season pitching form, Mater Dei still might be a dangerous team come May.
