Baseball: Two good pitchers required to win City title

Share

With a little over than a month left in the high school baseball season, it’s pretty easy to figure out which teams are legitimate City Section title contenders. They’re the ones that have shown they have at least two pitchers capable of beating top teams in playoff competition, along with playing solid defense.

The leading candidates: Banning, Chatsworth, El Camino Real, Narbonne, Kennedy.

El Camino Real’s starting pitchers, Jeremy Polon (4-1, 1.01 ERA) and Brian Gallagher (5-1, 1.12), give the Conquistadores a real shot at making it to Dodger Stadium.

Banning has Gino Brockway and Justin Yanez. Chatsworth has Josh Garcia and Tommy Palomera. Narbonne has Daniel Rocha and Angel Villela. Kennedy has Gilbert Hernandez and Felix Rubi, both juniors.

No team can make it to Dodger Stadium and win it without having two legitimate pitchers capable of throwing strikes and winning a pressure-packed semifinal and final game.

Defending champion San Fernando still has Alonzo Garcia, but the Tigers had better come up with a top No. 2 pitcher in the next month if they expect to make a return trip.
