Football: City Section seeding committee favored Garfield over others

Share

Of all the strange seeds from the City Section Division I playoffs, none is stranger than Garfield landing at No. 2.

The committee uses MaxPreps.com rankings as a recommendation, and Garfield was No. 5. So how did the Bulldogs suddenly pass Crenshaw, Carson, Narbonne and San Pedro to No. 2?

Even more stunning, there was a common opponent to compare. Garfield lost to Edison, 35-6. Edison lost to Los Alamitos, 35-14. Narbonne defeated Los Alamitos, 30-26.

So in other words, the committee screwed up big time.

In the end, they put San Pedro No. 1, Garfield No. 2, Narbonne No. 3, Carson No. 4 and Crenshaw No. 5.

Adding to the confusion is the MaxPeps rankings for the City Section that are public are based on CalPreps.com formula. Narbonne is ranked No. 1. The MaxPreps rankings that the committee used are different, had San Pedro No. 1 and were sent only to be used by the committee with their own MaxPreps formula.

The best team will surely emerge on Dec. 6 at the Coliseum, but the City Section credibility once again takes a hit.
