Football: There could be some City Section mud games
Any kind of rain can cause havoc for City Section fields that at this time of the year don’t have a lot of grass on certain spots of the field.
That means there could be some muddy fields on Friday night for City Section quarterfinal games.
Top-seeded Narbonne is facing Birmingham at home on Friday, and Coach Manuel Douglas said, “It’s a typical LAUSD field. It doesn’t have grass in the middle.”
Douglas didn’t water the field this week, anticipating rain, so if the rain doesn’t continue, it should be fine. But Birmingham Coach Jim Rose is asking his sophomore running back, Sterling Salguero, “Are you a mudder?”
Narbonne continues to win even though its All-City running back, Johnell Jackson, has been sidelined with a broken leg and won’t be back until next week at the earliest. Larry Seuga continues to be a capable replacement, and quarterback Eban Jackson knows how to handle pressure from his days as the quarterback at Long Beach Poly.
“All we have to do is beat them one day out of 365,” Rose said. “I can see why they’re the No. 1 seed. They run, they pass, they do what they want. The run a ton of plays.”
