Girls’ basketball: Fairfax wins playoff opener by the score of 89-4

Share

In case no one noticed, top-seeded Fairfax won its City Section Division I girls’ playoff opener by the score of 89-4 over Angelou. And No. 2 Narbonne defeated Verdugo Hills, 69-9. Fairfax outscored Angelou, 34-0, in the first quarter and 21-0 in the second quarter.

The question is what in the name of common sense are Angelou and Verdugo Hills doing in Division I?

“It could have been 200-0,” Fairfax Coach Judi Edwards said. “It wasn’t good for us. We were very sympathetic to Angelou. It wasn’t a good thing.”

It’s part of the great formula put together by some City Section coaches to put a bunch of weak teams in Division I who would have no chance of doing anything in Division II and III. By doing this, it fills out the brackets and helps the City Section come state playoff time, but what kind of lesson is it teaching the participants?

There better be new thinking soon.
