Michigan School Plans to Offer Pro Tennis Management Course

Ferris State College is serving up a new degree program--professional tennis management.

Taking a lead from its 11-year-old professional golf management course, Ferris State’s Board of Control decided to offer the tennis management course as part of its marketing curriculum in the School of Business.

“The objectives of the curriculum are to provide the necessary educational background and professional internship experience for employment in the growing leisure industry of tennis clubs and recreational centers,” said Richard C. Hansen, dean of the business school.

In addition to the four-year requirement for the marketing degree, scholars in professional tennis management will spend three 10-week internships with tennis managers.

Tennis management students will take courses including racket repair, tournament administration and tennis teaching techniques.

“As the placement experience of our PGM (professional golf management) program has demonstrated, students also will continue to have the option for employment in the other more traditional marketing fields--retail, sales, marketing research, industrial sales and others,” said Hansen.
